The European kingfisher (alcedo atthis) is a bird of the waterside, since it feeds entirely upon aquatic animals. It has regular perches or stands from which it fishes. These may be a few inches or many feet above the water. It sits upright, its tail pointed downwards. It drops suddenly with a splash and usually returns at once with a struggling captive. The nest is a tunnel in a sandy bank, usually, though not always over water. Both birds excavate. Most incline upward for about three feet before the nesting chamber is reached. The six to seven or even more round white eggs are placed on a litter of fish bones and disgorged pellets. The eggs are pink. The first clutch is usually laid in...

These two birdies were one of many spotted on my trip to the Amazon... but because I was nearly always on a moving boat when they were seen - and they sit on narrow perches where it's tough to focus - I was unable to get even one decent pic of any of them. Even getting some film was a struggle. Anyway, the Ringed Kingfisher (Megaceryle torquata) was a large and easy bird to learn with the smaller Green Kingfisher (Chloroceryle americana) being a bit of a toughie when compared to the larger, but similarly coloured and patterned, Amazon Kingfisher (Chloroceryle amazona). If someone thinks the Green I have labelled is in fact the Amazon, please tell me! I'm pretty sure it's a female either way.
